Carnaval!

Guess who visited us at school today? Bohomme Carnaval!

We watched a video of a chilly canoe race during Carnaval on the Fleuve St. Laurent, the Saint Lawrence River. Then, in the gym, we had teams do an imaginary canoe race! They also sang and made Bonhomme decorations with Mme Kilmartin, and made ice sculptures with sugar cubes with Mme Dufour. Then we all met in the gym to sing and greet Bonhomme Carnaval!

This afternoon, children will share their own Bonhomme stories in small groups, and bring home this year’s effigie, the small plastic decoration that visitors to the Quebec Carnaval carry to Carnaval activities.

Happy Family Day week-end!

Mme Harmatuk

Le 8 février

This week:

We began learning about the Quebec winter festival, Carnaval!

Bonhomme Carnaval wears the Métis sash, and we have been learning about the Métis. Mme Niwa also brought in traditional wooden spoons and we played the spoons to the Bonhomme song.

Mme Jules is coming into our class once a week until March Break to help us learn about the 7 Sacred Teachings.

In French, we are learning about the letter c. When the c is followed by a, o or u it makes a hard c sound as in cake, UNLESS the c is written as ç, in which case it sounds like an s. When the c is followed by e or i, it makes an s sound.

Canard, coccinelle, cube, garçon, cerise, citron are the examples we are using as a focus.

In math, we measured with metre sticks today. We have also continued to add 10, 20, 30, 40 to a number.

Tomorrow, we will painting our snowmen inspired but the secret life of snowmen at night.

We will also begin planning our own fairy tales as children become authors of their own books! We have been reading fun reinvented fairy tales such as Cinderella as a penguin, Cendrillon Pingouin, as well as fairy tales that challenge stereotypes such as Cinder Edna, who was happier than Cinderella- fun, laughter and caring for the planet brought her more joy than the splendour and vanity that Cinderella found didn’t bring her the joy she thought it would.

Today we celebrated diversity with rainbow day, but we are also honouring and celebrating diversity every day! I can’t wait to hear the children’s own fairy tales! This is a big project that we will wrap up before March Break.

Canadian Community Show and Tell

February/March Show & Tell

Montre et raconte

A Canadian Community

Our next focus will be on the many diverse communities in Canada! Each student will choose a community in Canada to research at home. The information will be shared with the class so that we can build our communal knowledge of Canada and appreciate its diversity. Show and Tell is also an opportunity to develop French speaking skills.

Step 1:

Choose a community outside of B.C. but in Canada. Locate it on a map of Canada. Say the name of the community and its province or territory in French. (We have learned them).

Step 2:

Find out some interesting facts about the community. (Culture, landscape, activities).

Step 3:

Bring in an image that represents the community. For example:

-a photo

-a postcard

-a drawing

Write the name of the community on or beside the image.

If a student wishes to also bring in an object or souvenir, he/she is welcome to!

We would love to borrow the image so that we can create a bulletin board with images across Canada. Keep your image postcard-sized or smaller if possible please so that we can fit 19 of them on our wall! Thanks.

Please share your first and second choice with Madame so that we can avoid repetition AND learn about communities in all of our provinces and territories.

Not represented yet: Nunavut, North-West Territories, Yukon, Saskatchewan, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland.
