Joyeuse Halloween!

We played fun games led by the grade 7s in the gym today. We tossed rings onto witch hats, played tic tac toe with cats and jack-o-lanterns, pinned the ‘Boo!’ on the ghost and went “boo-wling!”.

Parent Teacher Interviews

On Thursday, Nov. 10th, children will be dismissed at 12:46. Please send your child with a LARGE snack that day as we will not eat lunch at school.

I will be available in person or via zoom for parent-teacher interviews on Nov.10th. Soon, you will receive a link to sign-up through our PTFast system. There are 10 minute time slots between 1:30-3pm, 3:30-5pm and 6-7pm. You will be asked to let me know if you request in person or zoom. I am hoping to send out the link by the end of the day tomorrow.

Have a Happy Halloween!

Le 27 octobre

I am SO proud of our students for working together and being creative to rise to the challenge given to us by grade 7s:

Create a witch door decoration using recycled materials. We also have a ghost cat, spell book, magic wand, cauldron, moon, sun and jack-o-lanterns.  Everyone contributed to our masterpiece!

Technology

Please send your child to school with headphones that can be left at school until June, then brought back home. LABEL the headphones with your child’s name. Also, please send them in a LABELLED CONTAINER (small case/ bag/ ziplock) to keep cords in check. We will be using iPads to support French skills. Headphones with a microphone are ideal. Click here for an example of simple headphones with a narrow plug-in and built-in microphone.

Le 20 octobre

We have been busy in grade two!

ADST

Last week children began coding using blue bots. They continued this week and had lots of fun!

Children program blue bots to travel on a floor map.

Aboriginal Education

This week, we visited the gym twice to explore a huge Indigenous floor map. We observed Indigenous languages spoken in Canada, looked at locations and images of residential schools, recognized famous Indigenous people, and learned symbols for the Inuit and Métis.

We also read the Bella Coola legend of Tête-Aigle that explains why we have so many small islands off of the cost of B.C.

Books

Today we will take out library books and keep them for 2 WEEKS. Next week, we will preview book fair books on Monday.

Students may make purchases on Thursday with the class, or after school with a parent.

There will be no library book exchange next week.

French

Comprehension

Some parents have asked about if they should translate vocabulary in home reading book. If you would like to, I suggest limiting yourself to looking up 1-3 words per session. I recommend www.reverso.net and www.linguee.com as translation sites.

To check understanding of a text, I recommend that you do NOT ask your child to translate a sentence. This is an advanced, difficult skill! Instead you might:

  • point to something in the picture and ask, “What is this?” or “What’s happening here?”
  • ask, “What happened in the story?” We have been  working on retelling the beginning, middle and end of a story.
  • ask, “What is an interesting thing that you read?” in a non-fiction book.

We retell the beginning, middle and end of stories.

Phonetics

Our focus is the sound eu in feu this week (like cook.)

Math

We are working on:

  • adding 10 to a number
  • writing addition and subtraction 2-digit questions vertically emphasizing the tens (dizaines) and ones (unités) columns
  • adding and subtracting 10s and 1s from 2-digit numbers (NOT borrowing)
  • saying numbers to 100 in French

Montre et Raconte – Octobre/Novembre

A new show and tell theme AND format will begin late October! Please refer to the green October calendar that was sent home for your child’s presentation day. The November calendar will have students not presenting in October.

Each student will choose a plant or an animal native to our province of BC, or a natural wonder in BC to learn about.

Each child will conduct research about their topic. Find out:

  1. How to say the plant/ animal/ insect/ rock or place in French
  2. Where it is found in B.C.
  3. Something interesting to share about the topic in French!

Sample topics:

  • Spirit Bear/ Kermode Bear -L’ours Esprit/ L’ours Kermode
  • Black bear -L’ours noir
  • Pine tree– Le pin
  • Cedar tree- Le cèdre
  • Bald eagle -L’aigle
  • Pacific Ocean- L’Océan Pacifique
  • Stellar Jay- Le geai de Stellar
  • Jade- Le jade (our official mineral!)

Please bring in an object or visual such as:

  • An artifact (a piece of jade, a salmon bone, an eagle feather, a pinecone, a cedar bough, etc).
  • A photo from home
  • A drawing made by the student
  • A book from the library
  • A picture printed from the internet

*Please choose a WILD plant or animal native to B.C.- NOT a pet puppy, cat, etc

*Once your topic has been chosen, come see Mme to avoid duplication!

Also please bring a labelled image that we can put on our bulletin board!

Salute to the Sockeye

There is now a live web cam in our library! If you want to see more salmon arrive in the coming weeks, you can watch from home!

Here are some photos from our field trip to prompt discussions with your child if you didn’t join us.

We saw insides of a male Chinook salmon.

We learned about salmon habitat, including other plants, animals and insects in the area. We learned about invasive species as well.

We made connections with First Nations and salmon.

Home Reading

Wow, what a gorgeous day of salmon jumping, sun shining, Indigenous storytelling and exploring in nature!

We have a busy week ahead:

WEDNESDAY We are launching our home reading program! Folders and info will come home- read below.

THURSDAY Library books due.

FRIDAY Original art for optional art card purchases will come home. You may want to send your child with a library bag to protect their work.

French: Our sound is the long a again, this week spelled ez as in nez.

Math: We are exploring base ten blocks to represent 2-digit numbers and to uses as another addition and subtraction tool.

Let’s begin home reading!

This year, students will read in French at home, accumulating points that enable them to travel across Canada and beyond! In this way, we will be combining some of our social studies and science topics with our discussion in class of our home reading goals.

Students are encouraged to read daily, but you and your child together can choose how many times a week you wish to read. Read for approximately 15 minutes. For some children, this may mean reading a book. For others, it may mean reading a chapter in a short novel before the end of the year. For some, it may mean getting through part of a book. A kitchen timer and a bookmark can be your friends!

Once a week, on Wednesdays, students will choose 3 books. Rather than daily, books will be formally exchanged once a week. Children may also read library books, French books from home, or reread books more than once a week.

Each day your child reads at home, he/she/they need(s) to write the date and the title of the book. Then a parent signs beside the entry. I completed an example on the yellow log sheet in your child’s home reading “pochette.” The home reading folder does not need to come to school daily, but choose a safe place at home to keep it! On Wednesdays, we will count how many days your child read that week. One day reading at home = one point. With these points, your child will move across our Canada wall map. If your child reads more than one book, just record one title.

If your child has chosen books that are too easy or too difficult, please write a note to me in the agenda, and I will help guide your child’s choices. Reading at home should be fun, not frustrating! Also, books should provide the opportunity to develop some new vocabulary, so books shouldn’t be too easy all the time either. To begin the year, I will put out my easier books for students.

In summary:

  • Reading in French one day = one point
  • Accumulate points to travel across Canada
  • Write the book title on the Home Reading log
  • An adult signs beside the title on the date the book was read
  • Have fun reading!
