February 16

This week, in the spirit of Carnaval, students made their own Bonhommes Carnavals out of yarn. Bonhomme wears a Métis sash, so we have also been learning more about the Métis. We also had a focus on kindness leading up to Valentine’s Day. Show and Tell science experiments have been fun! A reminder about our visit to the Big Little Science Centre on Thursday, Feb. 21st. In math, students have continued to work with measurement, including both centimetres and metres. Yesterday’s skating was fun. Enjoy more fun this Family Day Week-end!

Math

Today we began exploring measurement. Students used their hands and feet to measure items in the classroom.

Using feet to measure!

Through our sharing and discussion, we learned that the size of hands and feet varied, and hence the usefulness of a standard unit of measure. We also built our French mathematical vocabulary:

longueur – length

largeur- width

hauteur- height

In French, our focus is the sound eur in these math words and also in the word coeur (heart) which leads us to…

Valentine’s Day

February is a month when the school focus is on kindness and preventing bullying. Throughout the year, our main classroom rule is “sois gentil(le)” – be kind. We will also be reinforcing kindness next week, and exploring Valentine’s Day vocabulary in French. If your child wishes to send Valentine’s to school, please include a Valentine for EVERYONE IN THE CLASS including BOTH genders. Because gender segregation and stereotypes in the early years has been associated with homophobia and bullying based on gender or perceived gender in later years, I am not comfortable with exclusion based on gender in our classroom. If your child is not comfortable giving valentines to some classmates, please do not bring any valentines to school. Valentines are not required! Also, please do not send treats to school for Valentine’s Day. Thank you.

On another note, today we learned about Carnaval! If your family wishes to join in the Kamloops Carnaval festivities, join us at Harper Mountain on Thursday night. Tickets are for sale through the LGES hot lunches web site. Unfortunately, I don’t expect there to be beaver tails, but there should be ‘la tire!’
