Truth and Reconciliation

We listened to stories and heard the history of Aboriginal People in Canada having their language taken away, and having to attend residential schools. We made connections with how children may have felt and coloured our own orange shirts. Today, we also had a secondary school student come in regalia and perform a traditional grass dance for us.

French

This week our focus was the sound ez as in nez. It makes the long sound in cake.

We also began guided reading. This is a time I read with children in small groups to focus on reading, comprehension and vocabulary skills.

Math

We have been using ten frames with a new train game that helps us add to 20. We are learning to add without having to always advance one number at a time on fingers.

Social Studies

We have learned about our province, La Colombie-Britannique. We heard a legend from Bella Coola that explains how the many islands in the Pacific Ocean were created.

Le 14 septembre

What have we been up to in the classroom? Here are a few activities that we have been doing.

Social emotional learning

Every morning, we check in using the Zones of Regulation. We have also been learning breathing, relaxation and visualization techniques using videos including the Go Noodle Flow series and Mme Mindset.

French

  • We have read stories about our class rule, Sois gentil, Be kind.
  • We wrote in our journals about how we can be kind.
  • Our focus this week is the sound é in bébé (long a is in cake).
  • We worked on printing skills on mini-whiteboards.

Math

  • Some numbers add up to 10. What might the numbers be? This open-ended question launched into ways to make ten, how to organize possible solutions, and thinking outside the box as one can add more than 2 numbers to make ten. Making ten is an important mental math skill that helps us add and subtract very large numbers.
  • We played Go Fish! In our version, you are looking for a match to add to your card to make ten.
  • We worked in our Cahier de calcul. Children will add and subtract at their own pace in this workbook throughout the year.
  • We explored the relationship between addition and subtraction by creating number families.

Make 10! 1+9, 2+8

Gym

  • In the gym, we work cooperatively with fun parachute games.
  • Outside, we have played games as a class and joined with the other grade 2 classes for games.

Art

  • Today, we started an art project inspired by the book Joyeux reveur. Children used watercolours and their imaginations to paint the sky. Tomorrow, children will draw themselves dreaming happy dreams, flying through the sky.

September / October Show and Tell

Students will bring in an object for Show & Tell to share in French. Please
have your child prepare in advance so that he/ she/ they may see me for
help with any special vocabulary.

Topic this month:

Choose an object that represents a sport or activity that you like to do
in your free time.
The object should be reasonably sized to fit into a mystery bag (shopping
bag size). Students will play 20 questions to try and guess the activity. Then
the presenter will tell us about what sport or activity he/she/they like(s) to
do and why in FRENCH. I suggest 2-3 sentences. If you are looking for sentence structures:

J’aime _______ parce que ____________.

Voici _________ (describe object brought to school).

Examples:
A sport you participate in.
An art activity you love to do at home.
A club that you are a part of.
An outdoor activity that you love to do with your family.

Special note: Many children love to play with toys in their free time! Please
try and avoid your child bringing a toy to school for Show and Tell. Try and
focus on an activity. For example if your child likes Lego, he/she/they could
talk about building and constructing. If your child likes Barbies, he/she/they
could talk about role playing and imagination games.

Le 6 septembre

Welcome! Your child is in our classroom, right at the end of hall near the intermediate playground. Today, children learned where “notre place” is, where our spot to line up in the mornings and depart from at dismissal is. We have 20 lovely grade two students in our room, and had a fun first day. Please discuss a pick up meeting spot at the end of the day so that your child knows where to go to find you at 2:46. The yellow gate on 9th avenue is a good spot.

The Year Ahead

Once the year gets rolling, we will introduce Show & Tell and a Home Reading Program for students. Students will be using agendas. This year, our agendas are delayed. Next week, we will use a back and forth folder, a “pochette” to bring home information. Later, we will use this folder for home reading.  Our focus for the start of the year will be on re-establishing our French during the first few weeks of school. We will also be reviewing math concepts from grade one. We learned about the zones of regulation today, practised rainbow breathing, and learned about our two class rules:

  1. Sois gentil. (Be kind).
  2. Aide les autres. (Help others).

What to Bring to School

  1. Water bottle: Students may keep water bottles on their desks as long as the bottles don’t leak. A sport or straw top is a popular choice. Water bottles should be washed at home regularly. Come with a full bottle if possible each day.
  2. Healthy snacks and lunch: Children should be able to independently open items. PEANUT-FREE, NUT-FREE.
  3. Active footwear: Students should wear running shoes daily. We often exercise on days that we do not have gym. Indoor running shoes will also be needed once weather gets wet. Flip flops, open-toed sandals and dress shoes are not good choices for school.
  4. Pencil Case: Each student can bring a small fun pencil case that fits inside his/her/their desk. Other school supplies will be provided.
  5. A positive attitude toward learning and French.

Upcoming Dates

  • Friday, Sept. 8: Welcome Back Assembly, Fire Drill
  • Friday, Sept. 22 PM: Terry Fox Run *note date and time change
  • Monday, Sept. 25: ProD Day (no school for students).

*Please be sure to return the WALKING PERMISSION FORM before our Terry Fox Run! They will be coming home soon. If your child spends time in two households, please email me to let me know so that I can send home 2 copies of notices when appropriate.

If you’ve read this far, here is a little info about me if you’re curious!

All About Me

My name is Mme Harmatuk. I have been teaching grade 2 (and grade 2/3) at our school for a number of years. Prior to that, I taught French as a Second Language, and both gr. 1 and gr. 6/7 French Immersion in Kamloops. Before that, I taught gr.5 French Immersion for a decade in West Vancouver. I have also taught gr. 4 and 5 French Immersion in Terrace, BC, and in Guelph, Ontario. For two years, I volunteered teaching English in Outer Mongolia. Prior to that, I taught bilingual preschool in Montreal, PQ. With the students, I love playing math games, authoring our own books, reading in groups, learning outdoors and creating a calm teaching environment to support learning.
