December Fun!

Wrapping up school before the holidays was a lot of fun! Once the snow came, we went sledding as a class! A reminder that snow pants are required for sledding. Many stuffies also visited our class during the last couple weeks of school, and the stuffies were very well behaved. They joined us during our learning, many reading with students and on their own. They also joined in on subtraction practice, helping play the subtraction train game. This game helps students master subtracting from 20 and lower. We have also continued to work on adding to 100. Our latest math problem to find solutions for was:

3? + 1? = ?2

Holiday Ornaments

Thank you to my elf who helped glue strings onto our ornaments, and thank you to the many families for the holiday cards, gifts and warm wishes. May your winter break be filled with rest and rejuvenate you for the new year!

Pyjama Parties

The children have been working hard at their classroom responsibilities in order to earn points for a class pyjama party that they asked for. They earned a bonus point today for making an effort to speak French in math. Bravo! If their excellent habits continue tomorrow, they will earn a class pyjama party for Friday!

Yes, there will be a school-wide pyjama and movie day next Wednesday, but we can still do something fun in our class on Friday.

  • Children can wear pyjamas to school.
  • Children will have some playtime, and may bring cards/ an indoor game/ colouring activity book to share with friends, or play with our classroom activities.
  • Children may bring stuffies to class.

Locker & desk clean-out

On another note, on the last day of school lockers will need to be cleaned out. So, please send an extra bag with your child  if they have lots in their locker to bring home. Indoor shoes and extra clothes will go home, so the holidays will be a good time to check if items still fit. A few children have said that their indoor shoes are too small, and they can’t do them up anymore. If your child will not be at school on the last day, please have them empty their locker on their last day.

Also, today grade two students cleaned out their desks, and we noticed that some students have 2-3 water bottles at school. Extra bottles were sent home. If you don’t see a water bottle for a while, please remind your child to bring it home at least once a week to wash it. I remind children, but we do not have a particular day that they must go home to be washed.

Carols

Next week, we will be singing carols school-wide in the gym every morning. Hope you are all having fun preparing for the holidays!

Winter Concert

Our concert begins Monday night at 6:30. The office has handed out extra tickets to those who requested some, so please contact the office if you didn’t receive yours. On the night of the show:

  • Drop your child off in the lobby at 6pm or shortly thereafter.
  • Keep your child’s boots and coats with you
  • Your child should be wearing only what he/she will wear on stage and not bring anything else
  • Pick-up will be after the show’s finale, in the lobby; look for a sign that says HARMATUK

Today we decorated our door! Winter, here we come!

  • Carols daily in the gym the last week before break

In French we are:

  • wrapping up our postcard writing
  • learning about the sounds ill, ille (like key) and eille (like play)
  • working in small reading groups with Madame
  • reading and discussing books about kindness, feelings and Christmas

In math we are:

  • adding, subtracting, adding coins, and working in workbooks
  • adding 2-digit plus 2-digit numbers using many strategies including blocks, mental math and diagrams

In social studies, we started learning about the Métis today by reading a legend about how the moon appeared. Every Wednesday, we continue to check in with our home reading, and one student has crossed Canada and arrived at the same spot where Terry Fox dipped his foot into the Atlantic ocean  to begin his Marathon of Hope. Keep up the home reading! If you are in the school, have a look in the hall at our art: trees in stained glass style.
