May 24

This week:

  • Mme Jules read Trudy’s Rock Story   to the class. Afterwards, each student decorated his/her own rock with favourite images. When your child experiences a difficult emotion, he/she can put that emotion into the rock, and then put the rock back in nature as a way to let go of feelings.
  • We explored fractions.
  • We finished writing our own animal books that we will share with Mme Dufour’s class next week, then send home.
  • We have been reading novels. Grade two students all finished reading French novels in a group with the teacher. Grade three students are reading both a French and an English novel. Students are proud of their accomplishments!
  • We wrapped up and shared our commercials promoting physical and mental health. Each group of students worked with a group of grade 8 FSL students from SKSS.
  • We are learning about hygiene and how to avoid getting others sick.
  • We are learning about culture in Mongolia and will learn about a minority culture in Mongolia next week.

Fun Day will be on Friday, June 14th. An information sheet is coming home today! Parent volunteers are appreciated.

May 13

On May 22, we will be doing a special activity with Mme Jules and an invited guest. For this activity, each student will need to bring in a smooth rock that will be painted. Please hunt outside over the coming week and find a rock to bring in! Thanks!

Hoping everyone had a Happy Mother’s Day.

  • Headphones are used routinely for learning with technology and are not provided by the school
  • Read, read, read! Children who read 100 times for home reading before the end of May will receive a FREE book through the Kiwanis Program!

Collaboration with SKSS

Students liked working with grade 8 FSL students from SKSS last week. In groups, students discussed what we can all do to support our nutritional, physical and mental health. Groups are working on preparing short commercials in French to share with the group. Grade two and three students impressed the high school students with their confidence, ideas, vocabulary and writing skills. Bravo! Our second work session will be later this week.

Here is some student work from this Spring!

Earlier this term, we studied erosion. Students made plastiscene models to show how water erodes different environments.

Rain eroding a mountain.

Fast moving water eroding the riverbank and cutting deeper into the land.

Water eroding rock.

A young mountain.

An older mountain, eroded over time.

This week, our focus in math has been on 3-dimensional shapes. Students enjoyed using construction kits to build their own 3-D shapes. We then used models to practice math vocabulary: prisme, pyramide, arête, sommet, face, base, cube, cylindre, cone, sphère.

Tomorrow, a French class from SKSS will be joining us for a collaborative project with a focus on how we can be healthy! We have been discussing nutrition, hydration, physical exercise and mental health over the past two weeks.

Today, the students had a fantastic time listening to Isabelle Larouche, a Québécois author who is visiting our school this week. She told the children an Inuit story, which tied in nicely to our studies earlier this year about Inuit culture. With many students reading novels, they may want to read one of her many novels. With big writing, lots of pictures, and fun topics, they look like they would be a good read for many students in the class.

Congratulations to so many students who have discovered engaging books and developed their skills through our home reading program this year. In addition to some prizes that I give out in class for reading across Canada, the school library, with the support of Kiwanis, gives each student who reads 100 times through our class reading program a free book. The cut-off for this program is the end of May.
