Fill a Sock

This Christmas, 2 grade 7 leadership students are collecting items to give to the unfortunate. Below is a list of the things our class is asked to include in our sock. Make sure that all the items you donate are UNUSED.  All donations are going to the Mustard Seed.

I am not sure yet how to organize avoiding duplication, but if you are shopping and would like to purchase any of these items, here a list of what to keep your eyes open for. Please remember that toiletries will be small travel size so that they can fit in a sock! The students will find out about this project within a week, and we will make a plan how to organize!

November 20

Today we are working again on masculine and feminine adjectives as students write about themselves. Students have been more and more successful at writing long interesting texts now that it is mid-November. Bravo!

We will also begin our first Rocks and Rings session today to explore the sport of curling.

Holiday Concert

What to wear

Students should wear nice clothes in the evening. Something dressy or festive is great! Please no head accessories such as Santa hats or reindeer antlers as they obstruct the audience’s view of students behind your child. There will be a dress rehearsal during the day, but fancy clothes are not required during the day.

Performances

The school office will organize evening tickets for the Sagebrush theatre. Seats are limited. Those who cannot come in the evening may come in the afternoon for the school’s final dress rehearsal in the gym.

Christmas Wish List

If you are cleaning out your home, we are looking for some gently used items for the classroom:

  • Hand towels/ tea towels to dry hands. (We have some we change daily or twice a day to save some trees. The ones we have are getting quite worn. Paper towel is always available as well).
  • Connect 4
  • Uno
  • Spot It
  • We do not have much space on our shelves for games, but could use the ones above. We also have Lego and Plus Plus bins if you wish to add to our supplies. If you have another game that you think would be good, let me know and I can see if we would have space for it/ a need for it.

Volunteer Work

If anyone has any time, I would love some help. Home reading books get worn over time, and if someone could cover them with mack tack to protect them for longer, it would be much appreciated. I have the mack tack, and you could take some books home to cover at your leisure. Let me know if anyone is interested, before or after the holidays. Thanks!

November 14

We have been learning about:

  • Number families in math
    • Often a child prefers addition or subtraction. Children learn relationships between the two, and how to use their strengths and mental math to solve equations. For example, if figuring out 13-9 is a struggle, think 9 + ? = 13. Some worksheets are being sent home so that you can see what children are working on and talk math with them.

A number family that explores the relationship between addition and subtraction.

  • Masculine and feminine words in French
    • From games with M. Charles, our French monitor, to writing down our own ideas, we have been paying attention to if a word is le requin or la tortue. We notice un/une, ma/mon, ta/ton and we also know how adjectives can change. We explore patterns that we see as well. Try to notice this during home reading too! Children did some excellent writing in their journals about animals of their choosing.

  • Show and Tell about wild nature in BC is wrapping up this week. Students have enjoyed hearing about many creatures, places and rocks with visuals including paintings, photos, owl pellets, copper wire, pinecones and cute stuffies!
    • Many students have chosen a community outside of B.C. but in Canada to research for our next Show and Tell. We hope to discover Canada’s diversity with this sharing, from varying landscapes to people and culture in many places across our country. If your child has not chosen a community yet, I have some suggestions! Provinces and territories NOT represented yet include: Saskatchewan, Manitoba, New-Brunswick, Yukon and North-West Territories. Also, children have tended to choose capital cities and larger centres. It would be nice to discover some small towns or remote aboriginal communities as well!

Upcoming Activities:

  • Skating! We will be skating with the other grade two classes over the winter. Our first skating day will be Dec. 12th. If your child has skates and a helmet, check to see if they still fit! If you would like to borrow any from the school, please arrange in advance a day that you can come try some on with your child.
  • In the new year, your child will need headphones for school. We will be using iPads to support our learning, so the headphones need to have a narrow jack as our iPads are in cases. Children will keep their labelled headphones at school until June, then take them home. Maybe a good stocking stuffer idea?!

Snow is here!

Most students were prepared at school with indoor shoes and outdoor clothes. A reminder that indoor shoes are required daily.

I strongly suggest that you send your child to school with an over the door hook for his/her locker. An inexpensive hook is adequate. With most students sharing a locker, there isn’t enough room for belongings inside during the winter. A simple hook over the locker door lets students hang wet snow pants up and makes more space in the locker for other things.

Upcoming dates:

  • Scholastic due Nov.22
  • Nov. 20 & 21- Rocks and Rings (an introduction to the sport of curling) in the gym
  • Wednesdays– count home reading points!
  • Thursdays– library.

Winter guidelines:

  • Students CAN
    • build snowmen
    • construct snow creations
  • Students SHOULD NOT
    • throw snow
    • destroy snow creations

The students had a lot of fun today in the snow. They also learned a new outdoor game: “Traverse-couleurs” from M. Charles. This game is popular on Quebec playgrounds and requires no equipment so children can play at recess and with friends.
