A new show and tell theme AND format will begin next week! Please refer to the green November calendar that was sent home for your child’s presentation day.

October 13

In grade two today…

In math:

We used our egg cartons, bread tags and dice to play the train game!

Some children asked if they could take their materials back home to play, but I said no, we will be playing this game more than once! If your child would like to play at home you need: 2 egg cartons cut into 10 each (per person), 20 counters per person and a die. The child rolls the die and places the correct number of “passengers” into the seats on the “train”, one passenger per seat. One train car gets filled at a time. The goal is to fill your train first. Players take turns rolling a die.

If a child has 6 passengers and rolls a 2, the child must say, “6 + 2 = 8” doing mental math BEFORE putting the passengers in the train. We are encouraging mental math, then using counters to check our answer. Near the end, the child needs to roll the exact number to get to 20, to make things a little tricky! For example, if you have 18, you cannot roll a 4 and win. You need to roll a 1 or a 2 to add passengers to your train.

Later this year we will change our game to a subtraction game.

If your child is away from school and would like to do some math, you can play this game or look at some on-line resources on the “les ressources” tab of this blog.

In science:

We looked at early stages of the salmon life cycle.

In health:

We started talking about how to take care of our TEETH!  A funny Robert Munsch story got us into the spirit.

Coming up:

Picture day will be tomorrow, Oct. 14th.

Library books will be coming home today. If your child forgot to bring them to school, please send in late books!

Home reading books can be changed tomorrow (every Wednesday). I imagine some children will be travelling to Alberta on our home reading map!

October 7

This week in grade two:

Math

We added BIG numbers today! Challenge your child to add 10 to a number.

39 + 10 =

23 + 10 =

77 + 10 =

French

We are learning some letter combinations that make the long a sound as in cake. To make things tricky, er sometimes makes the long a sound, and sometimes makes the sound air as in the air we breathe.

I have also started reading with small groups. Congratulations to the many students who recorded lots of home reading this past week! Bravo!

Social Studies

We have been learning about British Columbia, our diverse province!

Science

We will be learning about salmon beginning next week. We may even have a visitor outdoors come with a real salmon for us to see!

Egg Cartons

Please read how to cut two egg cartons into math “ten frames” for your child to bring to school by Tuesday.

Coming soon…

Library will be on Tuesday. Remember to bring your books and waterproof bag!

Stay tuned next week for more details regarding parent-teacher interviews on Oct. 21st. We will be connecting via zoom or the telephone.

Monday there will be no school due to Thanksgiving. Bring in egg cartons and library books on Tuesday!
