Le mardi 31 mars

Bonjour! Here is today’s work:

Langage

Détective de mots – Word Detective

In French books or on-line stories, search for words with the sound as in souris (ee) and ui , as in pluie (ooee). In class, we have done this work regularly on a mini-whiteboard. You can use paper, a chalkboard or a whiteboard depending on what you have at home. Be sure to copy words correctly! Then read the words.

Détective de mots

Maths

Low-tech: Continue review of adding to 20. If you have picked up a workbook from school, work on the next page for 20 minutes. You can also print off worksheets for your child to complete. Many students can add to 100, so cater to the level of your child.

High-tech: Play Puzzle Pics Addition Facts . Add to 20. If questions are too difficult, you can choose a lower number on the side. You can also explore other grade two games on Math Playground.

Gymnase

Get moving!

High tech:  Try cosmic yoga  or a Just Dance video.

Low tech: Try some yoga poses that we learned at school: L’avion, l’arbre, le bâteau, la fleur. Finish by lying on your back and relaxing each part of your body. Be still and relax.

Sharpen your pencils!

Tomorrow we will be journal writing. You will also have virtual music with M. Hogeveen.

Looking for more to do?
Explore the “chansons” and “les ressources” tabs on this blog. CBC kids has lots of French videos and blog posts for kids.

Le lundi 30 mars

Bonjour! L’école virtuelle commence aujourd’hui !

Welcome back to virtual school. Our new sound this week is:

ui makes the sound ooee (like zoo + see)

Write the ui words correctly in your best printing. If you pick up workbooks this week from school, you can work on p .8 in the cahier de vocabulaire.

lui, je suis, minuit, la nuit, un biscuit, du bruit, de la pluie, un buisson, un ruisseau, juillet

These are mostly common words, but email me if you need to know what a word means or use the translation tools (linguee or reverso web sites) found under the “Les ressources” tab on this blog.

Then use at least 3 of the list words in sentences. Write a few sentences or a short story that uses these words! Keep your work for sharing later. Make sure every sentence starts with a “majuscule” (capital letter) and ends in a “point” (period- or other punctuation) and that list words are spelled correctly.

Lecture

Read for 15-20 minutes in French. You can read a French book that you have at home, or a fairy tale. Choose a fairy tale from the list in the link if you wish. Read silently first, then reread with the soundtrack to check if you are sounding out words correctly. If that is too difficult, follow along with the soundtrack.

Maths

Review adding to 20. Play the game code sums. Children learned coding this year. This game requires students to select the correct answer to an addition question, then use arrows to move the robot to its destination.

Alternatives: If you pick up math workbooks from school, work on the next page of addition or subtraction for 15 minutes or as long as you wish. If neither a computer nor a workbook is available, create some questions with answers up to 20 such as:

9+8, 13+5, 17+2, 8+7, 14+5, 11+9

Some students will be able to add much larger numbers independently. Cater to your child’s needs/ appetite for a challenge.

Santé

Relax or get active with a dance we learned earlier this year. Walk, play in the backyard or get moving every day.

If your child is looking for more to do or enjoy, there are songs under the “Chansons” tab on the blog. Some are simple songs where children can sing along. Others are videos and student “lib dubs” to a Franco-Ontario group.

Stay tuned

Here is where I will be posting activities for your children next week. We will continue with some routines from class including:

  • a sound of the week
  • vocabulary words
  • reading
  • journal writing
  • math

We will also do some fun projects. On this site, I will add resources as we move ahead. There are many on-line resources, but I will explore which ones may be appropriate for our students. As each family has its own preferences and availability regarding technology, if you are able to visit the school next week at your allotted time, that would be ideal! Students will be able to use their paper workbooks at home in the weeks ahead. Looking forward to some long-distance fun!

March 17

As a parent and a teacher, I am often looking for resources to support children when they are experiencing anxiety, worry, and emotions that can be overwhelming. With the health pandemic facing us, I thought I would post some resources that might be helpful for some:

How to talk to your children about coronavirus.  An article with tips about how to talk with your children.

During the second term, as part of our health program, we learned about hygiene, including why hand-washing is important. We also learned and practice many breathing exercises that students have felt helpful as self-calming tools. You can review some that we learned in the gonoodle yoga flow series including rainbow breathing, on & off and melting:

In addition, we learned many yoga positions such as l’arbre, l’avion, la fleur, and la montagne. Although I taught these positions without videos, I have heard that many children enjoy the Cosmic Yoga series for kids. Spending time in wild nature has also been shown to support mental health. Stay healthy, inside & out:)

March 4

Please be aware of two upcoming events:

  1. On Thursday, March 12th our class will be presenting two poems in the school gym in the morning 9:30 – 10am. You are welcome to attend! Students have already done a great job learning their poems. There is no need to practice at home. Please arrive at the gym by 9:30. You will see a few classes present, including ours.

2. On Friday, April 17th all the grade 2 classes will be attending the BC Wildlife Park for a field trip and workshop. After the break, a field trip form will be sent home. In the meantime, please note that our class will be absent for the PAC hot lunch that day as it will be an all-day trip. If you have ordered already, please cancel your child`s lunch. When ordering, please be sure not to order a PAC lunch for April 17th. Apologies for this conflict.
