Snowmen At Night

Here is our Snowmen at Night art!

Remember to send your child to school with snowpants, mitts or gloves and a tuque! We like to sled when we have the chance. Children with snowpants may sled when weather cooperates!

Débranche et joue! Unplug and Play! January 25-29

A week of Unplug and Play activities begins in Kamloops this week! There are many fun activities to take advantage of in the community.

School Challenge

Literacy in Kamloops (LinK) invites you and your students to participate in Interior Savings Unplug and Play Family Literacy Week which takes place January 23rd to January 30th, 2021.

Our goal is to encourage families to find a healthy balance between screen time and active family time. We build literacy skills when we play and learn together.

One way to motivate school-aged children to Unplug and Play is to offer them the School Challenge. They pledge to reduce or eliminate recreational screen time for five days. There is a daily checklist to record achievements. Please return this checklist to the classroom teacher by February 4th.

Here at Lloyd George Elementary your child is welcome to take part in the following spirit days:

Monday – Reading Rocks so wear funky socks. Students wear some funky socks, or just wear 2 different socks.

Tuesday- A poem in my pocket. Write or bring your favourite POEM to share with people.

Wednesday- Read my t-shirt. Wear a t-shirt with words or a positive message on it for others to read.

Friday- Dress as your favourite book character.

January 21

January is in full swing! Here are some hilights of our learning in the classroom:

French

We have begun a Fairy Tale unit. We are currently reading traditional fairy tales, exploring the genre. Later, we will challenge stereotypes in traditional fairy tales by reading fractured fairy tales. For example, in traditional fairy tales, a young girl is often saved by a handsome Prince. We will challenge this stereotype by reading examples of young girls saving themselves, princesses and princes who enjoy gardening, recycling and inner happiness, and wolves who are kind and misunderstood. Before March Break, students will write their own fairy tales.

We continue to learn new letter blend sounds each week. This week our focus is the sound ail in chandail and aille in bataille.

During guided reading, we have read more books in small groups. Next, each group will read a script and present a short play to the class. Stay tuned in case your child would like to bring in a prop or costume from home!

Science

We have begun a unit on Matter. Matter is all around us. We are learning about states of matter, solid, liquid and gas.

Math

We have been measuring! First, our focus was on the concept of units of measure. We measured with our hands, our feet and pieces of string. Then, we moved on the the standardized units of centimetres and metres. We have also focused on vocabulary: length longueur, width largeur, height hauteur, longer than plus long(ue) que and shorter than plus court que.

Art

We are in the middle of a multi-media project inspired by the secret life of Snowmen at Night.

Social Studies

Children have begun their presentations of Canadian Communities. We have already learned about the beautiful Cabot Trail on Cape Breton Island and animals that roam near Dawson City, Yukon. We have also been learning about the Métis and Ontario.

January 4

Happy New Year! We have had a great start to the day, immersing ourselves in French with stories and word work. We are gearing up for new units after the break including:

Math- measurement, adding 10, 20 and 30 to 2-digit numbers

Science- matter

French- fairy tales, new sounds and plural endings on nouns

Gym- parachute games

ADST- coding

Drama- class acting and theatre

Show and will begin mid-January and continue through February. It’s time to explore more of Canada!

January-February Show & Tell – Montre et raconte:

A Canadian Community

Our next focus will be on the many diverse communities in Canada! Each student will choose a community in Canada to research at home. The information will be shared with the class so that we can build our communal knowledge of Canada and appreciate its diversity. Show and Tell is also an opportunity to develop French speaking skills.

Step 1:

Choose a community outside of B.C. but in Canada. Locate it on a map of Canada. Say the name of the community and its province or territory in French. (We have learned them).

Please share your first and second choice with Madame so that we can avoid repetition AND learn about communities in all of our provinces and territories.

Step 2:

Find out some interesting facts about the community. (Culture, landscape, activities).

Step 3:

Bring in an image that represents the community. For example:

-a photo

-a postcard

-a drawing

Write the name of the community on or beside the image.

If a student wishes to also bring in an object or souvenir, he/she is welcome to!

We would love to borrow the image so that we can create a bulletin board with images across Canada. Keep your image postcard-sized or smaller if possible please so that we can fit 17 of them on our wall! Thanks.
