In grade two today…

In math:

We used our egg cartons, bread tags and dice to play the train game!

Some children asked if they could take their materials back home to play, but I said no, we will be playing this game more than once! If your child would like to play at home you need: 2 egg cartons cut into 10 each (per person), 20 counters per person and a die. The child rolls the die and places the correct number of “passengers” into the seats on the “train”, one passenger per seat. One train car gets filled at a time. The goal is to fill your train first. Players take turns rolling a die.

If a child has 6 passengers and rolls a 2, the child must say, “6 + 2 = 8” doing mental math BEFORE putting the passengers in the train. We are encouraging mental math, then using counters to check our answer. Near the end, the child needs to roll the exact number to get to 20, to make things a little tricky! For example, if you have 18, you cannot roll a 4 and win. You need to roll a 1 or a 2 to add passengers to your train.

Later this year we will change our game to a subtraction game.

If your child is away from school and would like to do some math, you can play this game or look at some on-line resources on the “les ressources” tab of this blog.

In science:

We looked at early stages of the salmon life cycle.

In health:

We started talking about how to take care of our TEETH!  A funny Robert Munsch story got us into the spirit.

Coming up:

Picture day will be tomorrow, Oct. 14th.

Library books will be coming home today. If your child forgot to bring them to school, please send in late books!

Home reading books can be changed tomorrow (every Wednesday). I imagine some children will be travelling to Alberta on our home reading map!
