Last week in math students were presented with a challenge:

3? + 1? = ?2

Students demonstrated their understanding of 2-digit plus 2-digit addition in order to come up with solutions. Working together, students came up with 30+12, 32+10, and 31+11. After that many were stumped. Children persevered and with that came the joy of success when more and more possible solutions were discovered. As a teacher, it was a pleasure to see smiles reflect the figurative lightbulbs that illuminated in the minds of so many students. Finally, one student thought she had found all the solutions possible, and we organized our answers on the board to see if she was correct.
